Well we started the day off on the wrong foot with Shirley sleeping in, even though john made lots of noise. I guess she needed the sleep but we had agreed to start early. (Some may ask, "Why didn't you wake her?" And all I have to say: "Don't wake the sleeping bear!!" Anyway after a home-made breakfast we headed to Stellenbosch and the fantastic views of this great country. Steve had recommended the Fairview Winery where we also discovered they make great cheese. They have their own goat herd, several of which we took some pictures of as they exited from their tower house. The wine steward who served us was named Brian until we told him we had just come down from Zimbabwe. He then became very animated about his home. When we told him we had walked up to the Great Zimbabwe he gave us a little more wine in each glass, then he told us his Zimbabwe name means "Happy"! What a neat experience to see someone so excited about his own country, We bought 3 bottles of wine and a number of different types of cheese with a great spread of lime, ginger and rose water! Man it tastes so great! I will try to make this when I get home.
Went next to Simonsig Winery, which was only so-so, but they gave us each a wine glass. Drove to Stellenbosch and around the town, but decided to return to Cape Town. A good thing too, as our GPS quite on us. Luckily we were close to the airport and went in and got a newer, but smaller and with fewer options. It also kept quitting when Shirley tried to program it. Anyway we got back to Norma's.
Next morning we had breakfast and rushed to meet Ron & Carol at the Clock Tower in Cape Town so we could go to Robben Island. But when we got there the ferry wasn't operating. Too windy!! So we had a nice visit with Carol and Ron at a coffee shop. Did a little shopping, stopped for some beers and then headed home and to get groceries as we are hosting Norma, Carol and Ron for dinner tonight. John gets to cook a big meal again! Great evening hearing about Norma's life and Carol & Ron's trip on the Garden Route, which we will start tomorrow. Enjoy the photos.
