All of you who are on our face book page know we have now made it to Cape Town. Over the next few days I will bring you up-to-date as to our Shongololo Train trip with some recollections and pictures. The pictures attached to this blog are from our time in Victoria Falls.A very tourist town with lots of people who are very poor and work very hard at selling you things you don't need. One of the telling moments of our time in Victoria Falls was when Shirley and I were returning from a walk on the bridge that separates Zimbabwe from Zambia when a group of young men started asking us to buy various pieces of their carvings, jewellery etc. After about 20 minutes of their constant harassment Shirley lost her cool and said in a rather stern voice (you all know the voice I am taking about!) "what is it about NO you don't understand?!" Her look stopped several of them in their tracks and one younger one yelled at us. "We are only trying to sell you stuff we could be robbing you!" And he was right! After that we were more consistent in our saying no with no strong words or stern face.
In general the people are so poor and it breaks your heart to see such lovely people have to work so hard just to survive. In Zimbabwe this poverty is only because of the government.
Anyway here are a few pictures of our first few days in Africa!
From top to bottom they are:
1) local beer we enjoy very much on these very warm days!
2) Elephants that came to the train station on our first night and walked through town - just like a mongrel dog would do in Campbell River!
3)Warthog on the street in Victoria Falls
4) Sprys at Victoria Falls
5) Jane AKA Lucy on the vine in the Vic Falls walk
6) Zimbabwe side of the Falls in its low season
7) Tarzen AKA john
Glad to be able to hear from you again.
